Cold-callers targeting CASTLETON |
||
|
We have received reports of males claiming to be ex-offenders and targeting rural villages, such as Castleton, for cold-calling activity.
They appear to be going door-to-door, telling residents they are ex-offenders on a “rehabilitation scheme.” This is false—no such scheme exists in this area. It has also been noted that some individuals may produce ID cards or lanyards to support this false claim.
This story can pressure residents into feeling obliged to support them in their supposed “rehabilitation.” To do this, they will likely ask - with persistence - for help in meeting a sales quota by selling household goods such as dusters, windscreen scrapers, cloths and more at an inflated cost. Reports of this activity often come from areas with a higher proportion of vulnerable elderly residents, suggesting these areas may be deliberately targeted; concerns are shared regarding possible additional motives as these individuals move through villages and sometimes enter homes.
We advise all residents to avoid opening the door to such strangers. If you do engage in conversation and they claim to be "ex-offenders or ex-prisoners", feel confident in ending the conversation and report the incident to us on 101 and contact Action Fraud for more advise.
Furthermore: Free “No Cold Caller” signs will be available to collect from the CO-OP shop in Castleton, in the next few days.
Seasonal Tip: Reconsider the security of any parcels being left around your house as we now lead up to Christmas and the holiday season. | ||
